- José María Heredia y Campuzano was born in Santiago de Cuba to Domingo de Heredia Mieses Pimentel Guridi and French Louise Girard d’Houville.
- When he was eight years old, the family moved to France from the West Indies. The future poet returned to Havana when he was 17, but eventually made France his home.
- The young poet published his poem En el teocalli de Cholula, when he was 16 years old. The prose poem, a mediation other ruins of pre-Hispanic temple, is still considered to be one of his best works.
- Mr. Heredia has a classical / religious education in Paris but earned his law degree from the University of Havana in 1823.
- The poet’s body of work is not big, but he made up in quality what he lacked in quantity.
- His sonnets were circulated as manuscripts and gave José Maria de Heredia a reputation as an excellent poet before they were even published.
- His first book, Les Trophées, containing 118 sonnets was published in 1893. His good friend, artist Ernest Jean-Marie Millard de Bois Durand, illustrated the book with original watercolors.
- A year after being granted a French citizenship in 1893, he was elected to the Académie française 1901 and became librarian of the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, in Paris.
- He was the first poet in Latin America to be considered part of the American Romanticism movement.
