Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (17 February, 1836 – 22 December, 1870) was Spanish Romantic poet and writer of short stories. He is considered to be one to the most important figures in Spanish literature.

- Gustavo Adolfo Claudio Domínguez Bastida was born in Seville, Spain to a family of Flemish origins. His father, José, was a successful painter whose paintings were sought after by tourists. Young Gustavo showed affinity for drawing as well and kept drawing throughout his life.
- Occult and mystery themes have been the themes of the young man’s art, and have followed him throughout his life.
- At age five, Gustavo lost his father, and at age 11 his mother died. The young man and his brother were raised by their uncle, Don Juan de Vargas, who loved them as if they were his own. Gustavo, however, went to live with Doña Manuela Monahay, his godmother.
- Valeriano, his brother, devoted his life to painting (he painted the portrait above). The brothers remained at each other’s side until Gustavo’s death, Valeriano died three months later.
- Doña Manuela had a big library, and the future poet spent hours in it. As an educated lady, she supported his passion study.
- When he was 17 years old, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, moved to Madrid to pursue a literary career.
- He wrote for several newspapers and periodicals but lived the rest of his life in dire straits and an unhappy marriage.
- Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer became famous posthumously when many of his prose and poems, which were published individually, appeared in books form.
- The poems Bécquer wrote are known for have medieval settings, and supernatural characters.
- To this day, Bécquer is considered to be the most read Spanish writer after Cervantes.
