Guillermo Valencia (29 October, 1873 – 8 July, 1943) was an poet, and translator from Colombia who also dabbled in politics.

  1. Born in Popayán, Colombia as Guillermo Valencia Castillo. He lost his parents at the age of eight.
  2. In 1899 Guillermo Valencia published his first volume of poetry titled Ritos (Rites). The volume included original poems, as well as ones he translated from Portuguese, Italian, and French.
  3. Valencia also ran a poetry magazine titled Magazine Paginas de Anarkos. This magazine was a very prestigious publication in its time.
  4. In 1908 Mr. Valencia married Josefina Muñoz Muñoz. The couple had five children.
  5. As he got older, he stopped writing original poems and focused on translations.
  6. As a politician and statesman, he ran twice to be the President of Colombia, but lost both times.
  7. and Mrs. Valencia’s children include Colombian President Guillermo León Valencia, and Josefina Valencia Muñoz, Governor of Cauca.
  8. Pedro Felipe Valencia López, the poet’s grandson is a Colombian politician.
  9. His house in Popayán is a museum in Mr. Valencia’s honor.
  10. Colombia’s national poetry prize is named in his honor.
