Eight (+1) Books for Father’s Day

June 16, 2012

It’s not too late, it’s really not. You can still buy your dad a gift for Father’s Day, especially with the speed that eBooks or gift cards can be delivered. Here are my top 5 recommendations for father’s day gifts which your dad would love.

For the History Buff:Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow

Book Review: Washington — A Life by Ron Chernow

This marvelous Pulitzer winner book breaks the wooden image of Washington and brings out the character of the man we all learned about with all his charm and personality.

For the Conspiracy Theorist:Enemies: A History of the FBIby Tim Weiner

Enemies: A History of the FBI by Tim Weiner

– A marvelous book which about tells of the 100 year history of the famous organization. Mr. Weiner is a Pulitzer Prize winning author and a former New York Times reporter who wrote largely about American security.

For the Ambitious Dad:The Art of Warby Sun Tzu

Thoughts on: The Art of War by Sun Tzu

While The Art of War was certainly written with ancient Chinese generals in mind, it applies to all types of management and could be read over and over again (the book is about 64 pages) with new insights every time. The gift that keeps on giving.

For The Square Dad: Inside Delta Force by Eric L. Haney

Inside Delta Force: The Story of America's Élite Counterterrorist Unit by Eric L. Haney

Do you ever wish your square dad would lose a side and become a triangle (delta) just for a day. This memoir about the beginnings of the Army’s elite unit will take care of that.

For the Environmentalist Dad:TheRiver of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journeyby Candice Millard

The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard

Go on an adventure with former President Theodore Roosevelt into the thick of the Amazon forest. You’d think twice about hugging a tree again.

For the Cowboy Dad:The Last Gunfight: The Real Story Of The Shootout At The O.K. Corral — And How It Changed The American Westby Jeff Guinn

The Last Gunfight: The Real Story Of The Shootout At The O.K. Corral — And How It Changed The American West by Jeff Guinn

Does your dad wear his sheriff pajama’s to bad?
Does he embarass you walking around with a 10 gallon steston calling your friends “pardner”?
This book is for him, where the author cuts through the myth to tell the reader how wild the west really was.

For the Comic Book Geek Dad:The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clayby Michael Chabon

Book Review: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon

One of the most remarkable works of fiction which follows the lives of two artists who mirror Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel (creators of Superman). A Pulitzer Prize Winner.

For the World War II Buff:Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Book Review: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

No one I know didn’t like this book and your dad, WWII buff or not, is going to love it, I promise.

Of course, if all else fails you can still get an Amazon.com Gift Card – hey… at least you tried.

These are all books my father would have liked to read, my daughter is reading the Michael Chabon right now (a little light reading while she recovers from jet lag, i suppose)

    Great selection!

That’s quite a good selection of books. They all sound interesting. I’m especially interested in “A River of Doubt” Hope you have a happy father’s day!

Hmm…I can see my Dad getting into a few of these, but the one I got for him this year was AMERICAN SNIPER. So far, he’s loving it. ^_^
