Thoughts:
This book was written in 2015 and I believe that today is it even more relevant. Not simply because of the attack on Israel but the monstrous future of a theocratic kingdom under the guise of religious extremism.
The Third Templeby Yishai Sarid is both fast paced and touching. The glimpse into a theocratic country where ancient rituals are not only practiced but expanded. Especially poignant is the ritual of animal sacrifice on an almost industrial scale, all by hand. While beasts of burden are sacrificed physically, human beings are scarified mentally, and society is only for the rich and healthy.
Mr. Sarid’s story is a warning to all those who wish for the return of ancient customs and government. In a place where absolute love of G-d is taught, people put the sick, poor, and wretched into a dark corner where no savior exists and words of comfort disappear when hunger, and disease strike.
It occurred to me that this excellent book is about democracy, but without democracy being in it. Instead, democracy cries in the shadows of every line, while messianic blindness that ignores human beings in favor of ancient rituals thrives. The warning is clear: we have to defend ourselves against the religious run state before it’ll be too late.
Synopsis:
Israel has been destroyed by non-conventional weapons. An officer, Jehoaz, leads the survives in a Messinian fever, reconquer some of the lands and push out all who live there. The world, of course, is outraged by Israel’s actions (though not so much using unconventional weapons) and boycotts the new kingdom of Judah.
Jehoaz declares himself King, and in religious fervor the people abandon the study of the sciences, technology, philosophy, and strategy in favor of religion. Jehoaz also managed to retrieve the arc of the covenant and trap G-d in the third temple he built.
Prince Jonathan, Jehoaz’s son, is tormented by an angel, warning him that his father’s sacrilege will be the undoing of the kingdom. The story is written from a journal written by Jonathan, sitting in the enemy’s jail.
