Thoughts:

The Gabriel Allon books are filled with colorful characters and escapism, this book is no different. Once again, Allon is nudged away from a comfortable retirement with his Italian wife to pursue an art heist, which opens the window into a much sinister plot.

The power of history, questions of inconvenience when it comes to one’s consciousness, justifications galore, and nuances of bad behavior are all part of The Rembrandt Affair by Daniel Silva. Much like the previous books, Mr. Silva does not shy away from the dark side of history, and while not delving into horrors, the tragedies are still there.

The book blends art, history (but not “art history” per se), current affairs, and humanity. The locations are, once again, magnificent and made me want to hop on a plane and walk in Allon’s fictional footsteps.

The thrill of adventure is, of course, a large part of the story but reminds us that we cannot escape history, and that the almighty god of money is no one to be trifled with. Along with Allon, his Mossad family joins for the adventures, as well as the CIA and MI6 who all have a stake in this investigation, turned into a geopolitical nightmare.

As always, I enjoy this series even though the books follow similar patterns.
Nevertheless, spending time with familiar favorites is always a nice way to spend some free time.

And Gabriel Allon, for once, doesn’t kill anybody!

Synopsis:

It seems that London art dealer, Julian Isherwood, cannot leave Gabriel Allon in peace. As happens all too often, Isherwood has a problem and Allon is the only solution.

An art restorer has been murdered while a lost portrait painted by Rembrandt has been stolen. Allon follows the clues from London, to Buenos Aires, to Lake Geneva discovering along the way that the mystery extends beyond a murder and a painting, into the geopolitical realm.
