Thoughts:

I enjoyed the previous books in this trilogy, and I can only imagine how difficult it must be to continue to write at this level. The first book, 1793, was an excellent historical thriller that transported me to Stockholm, and all the misery of living in that depraved town during that era.

Like the previous novels, the characters are well defined, strong and cannot leave the reader apathetic or unsympathetic. However, the star of the book, in fact, the whole series, is Stockholm itself.

We find that Sweden itself is in turmoil. King Gustav III has been assassinated, basically ending the monarchy. The crown prince, Gustav IV Adolf is not up to the challenge and the country seems to know it, as the last throngs of imperialist Sweden are drowning in the winds of a revolution.

While the characters remain strong, the plot is very weak and somewhat confusing. There’s some sort of political intrigue, lots of misery, and casual violence, but it’s not as intense as the first book.

The plot, while historically interesting, goes on irrelevant side stories. The ending is just OK, very strange, and, I thought, unsatisfying.

The Order of the Furies: 1795 by Niklas Natt och Dag, is written beautifully and atmospheric, yet not indicative of this masterful series. This excellent trilogy deserved much better than thunders of pages of inaction.

Synopsis:

Tycho Ceton is prowling Stockholm without a penny to his name, attempting to reclaim his lost honor. No one knows what he’s planning, but Emil Winge is planning to stop him.

Jean Mick Cardell, the one-armed watchman, is still searching for Anna Stina Knap. He is not the only one, Anna Stina has a letter that could be devastating for Sweden if it got into the wrong hands.
