October 25, 2016

About:
The Marvels by Brian Selznick is a fictional book in the same style as his previous books, merging pictures and words to complement one another and tell a complete story.

Thoughts:
My daughter borrowed The Marvels by Brian Selznick from the local library, remembering how much we liked Hugo. I asked her to read it after she was done, she gave it to me even though I don’t think she finished it.

While not as good as Hugo, this book but the story is still very touching with beautiful pictures that move the story along. The story has many surprises and some twists which kept up my interest to the end.

The last quarter of the book moved very slowly for me. I already knew all the characters and there was little development with them even though the story moved along. I would have preferred it if the author would have weaved the pictures along with the narrative in that portion.

I still liked the book very much and enjoyed it. This is the second book I read from Mr. Selznick, but I am looking forward to read more.

Synopsis:
The lone survivor of a ship wreck in 1776, Billy Marvel, finds himself working in a London theater and is the patriarch of a long line of distinguished actors. The story jumps to the 1990s and follows Joseph, a runaway who ends up in his uncle’s London home. Joseph has to solve several mysteries related to the past where our two stories finally come together.
