About:
The Lion’s Gate: On the Front Lines of the Six Day War by Steven Pressfield is a narrative history book of one of Israel’s most critical wars. The book is written from the Israeli perspective and rich in detail, but also a bit graphic.

Thoughts:
My father fought in the Six Days War, when he was alive he told me some stories about the war but I never thought to ask more – now I regret it. When I heard of The Lion’s Gate: On the Front Lines of the Six Day War by Steven Pressfield from creativepenn.com, I immediately bought it.
A book about a most interesting subjects by one of my favorite authors – how can one go wrong?
I was not mistaken, this is a great book with lots of details, great research and excellent narrative. Fans of military history will especially enjoy this book as it covers many aspects of the war, from the generals & politicians to the guys in the trenches.
The book is part history, part historical fiction. While much of the book is based on outstanding research and first-person interviews, some of the book is told from a perspective which the author himself wrote but relied on historical information for reference. A most interesting way to write the book and a brave decision by the author (who states his method in the forward).
Mr. Pressfield does a fantastic job bringing across the notion of just how small Israel is, which puts the urgency in Israel’s decision into context. The author also brings forefront the personal relationships between Israel’s leaders and their individual and common histories which shaped their lives and their views on survival. For example, Menachem Begin (future Prime Minister) has survived a Russian gulag and the holocaust, while Defense Minister Moshe Dayan was a native, their views differed widely based on their experiences.
While this is not a comprehensive book about the Six Days War, it’s an excellent book which will give the reader much needed background and stories about the war. A well written book, a good read about a conflict and the Israeli plight.
