Thoughts:
The Kryptonite Kid by Joseph Torcia is a book which will stay with you for a long time. This book has many layers and can be read as a coming of age story, a tragedy or a story of faith among others.
The story of a young boy, having a difficult life, turning to Superman is engrossing, troublesome, touching and haunting all at the same time. The ending is very powerful and will stay with you for a long time.
This is obviously a YA book, it is probably more appropriate for the 14-16 crowd. I don’t think many 12 year olds would be able to comprehend the depth of the book or deal with the overall sadness one feels upon finishing it.
I highly recommend this book, it is sad and funny, rich and a quick read as well.
Synopsis:
Jerry Chariot is a sensitive boy living in a cruel world. His parents abuse him, the nun at his Catholic school terrorizes him and he has only one friend. Jerry manages to find a god-like figure in Superman, the comic book hero. Even when he is made fun of, being challenged again and again by society and adults, Jerry keeps his faith.
