Thoughts:
I have read The King of Vinland’s Saga by Stuart W. Mirsky a few years ago and jotted down what I thought. I was recently reminded of this book, with no particular reason, went back to my notes and decided to put together something more coherent.
I read this book during a time in my life where I had to make a conscious effort to read more – and read everything. I rediscovered, after years, how much I enjoyed reading, this was before this blog has begun, before family, before kids where much of my hard earned money went towards books.
The story revolves around Vikings who visited America in pre-Columbus days. Vinland is the Nordic name for America.
This rich adventure novel has memorable characters and an epic story. While dark, bloody and gloomy, the novel is poetic and provides and epic family saga. Despite its length, this is a fascinating read.
Synopsis:
Sigtrygg Thorgilsson, the illegitimate grandson of the famed Leif Eiriksson, is told that his birthright has been forfeited and that he is not getting the promised clain in Vinland. Sigtrygg steals a boat, gives up on his claims in Greenland and leaves for Vinland with a group of supporters.
In Vinland they meet the Skraelings, or natives, and help them in their tribal wars. A group of Greenlanders have arrived, trying to take over Sigtrygg’s claim again.
