Thoughts:
I have a Jeopardy calendar on my desk, which my wife gives me every year. Daily a group of co-workers comes by for the daily question. This is how I was introduced to Nellie Bly and her book Ten Days in a Mad-House by Nellie Bly.
Nellie Bly is the pen name of Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman, an accomplished journalist, inventor and adventurer. Ms. Bly is famous for traveling around the world in 72 days, emulating the fictional Phileas Fogg of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days. Ms. Bly is also credited with launching the field of investigate journalism when she pretended to be mentally ill in order to study mental institutions of the time.
The book is very readable and provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of 1800s institutions and the way they treated women. It is a quick read and is an enthralling glimpse into early investigative journalism. In 2015 a movie was made based on the book, see trailer below.
