Thoughts:

Rogue Lawyer by John Grisham is actually a collection of several short stories, which have very little, or nothing at all, to do with each other. It’s a missed opportunity by this prolific author since each one of these stories could most likely be a full-length novel.

Sebastian Rudd, the protagonist, works out of a large van, with a bodyguard. He is not afraid to take on city hall and the police, as well as keeping company with criminals, hence is constantly armed.

The first part is used to introduce Rudd to the reader, the other parts have some loose narratives in common. Each time Rudd, his practice, and/or his son are threatened.

In several of the stories, Grisham uses his novel for social commentary on the state of the judiciary system. Whether it’s incompetent judges, prosecutors who just want to win at all costs knowing they’re throwing an innocent person in jail, or the system protecting warrior cops. Even though it’s a bit preachy, I thought the characters were interesting. However, if you think that the justice system can do no wrong, and every person the cops arrest is guilty – this book might not be for you.

Like other John Grisham books, I enjoyed the courtroom drama, as well as the gritty atmosphere in an unknown US city, which frankly could be almost any big city. While a bit disjointed, I enjoyed this book. It’s easy to read, and entertaining, but more or less predictable with the outcome, not the legal, or illegal, maneuvering.

Synopsis:

Sebastian Rudd is a criminal lawyer, or a “criminal” lawyer, or a criminal-lawyer – depends on which plot point you want to pick. Rudd is not a nice man, he’s a bad father, bad attitude, and is self-righteous. However, if one is charged with a crime, a pit-bull lawyer like Rudd, who truly believes in “innocent until proven guilty” is the guy you want on your side.

The cases Rudd represents include an MMA fighter who killed a referee, a teen who has been framed with murder and molestation of two young girls, a homeowner whose wife was killed by “warrior cops” in a botched raid, representing a mobster on death row, and a case of human trafficking ring.
