Thoughts:
My kids got this Number the Stars by Lois Lowry as a gift, and as usual I tried to get ahead of them and read so we can later talk about it. To this day they haven’t read the book yet (busy at school), but I did.
This novel was an easy read, easy to follow with a few story-lines which are not confusing. The characters are likeable and the author tries to bring fourth the emotion horrors of World War II and racism without touching too much on the implementation and horrific outcomes of such policies.
The book’s background is the rescue of the Danish Jews during the Nazi occupation. Amazingly the Danish resistance movement managed to evacuate 7,220 Jews out 7,800, along with 86 non-Jewish spouses. This rescue operation is considered to be one of the largest actions of resistance by countries occupied by the Third Reich. The Danish Underground, at the their request, have been honored collectively by Yad Vashem as “Righteous Among the Nations”, there is also a permanent exhibit in the US Holocaust Museum in Washington DC about the operation.
This is a short book (about 140 pages), but it is worth reading. It doesn’t tug at your emotions like other Holocaust fiction, but certainly does tell a great story.
Synopsis:
Annemarie Johansen lives in Nazi occupied Denmark. When the Nazis start getting rid of the Jews, her best friend, Ellen Rosen, stays hidden with the Johansens. Throughout the book, the kids watch how Danish resistance managed to rescue over 99% of Denmark’s Jews from the Nazis.
