Thoughts:

While I was never a huge fan of the author’s TV shows, I certainly appreciate his many accomplishments throughout his life. Someone who had done so much, and a success by any measure, not necessarily monetary, has much to share with the rest of us.

In Never Give Up: A Life of Adventure, author Bear Grylls shares anecdotes from his life, business, TV shows, as well as family adventures. The stories are written in a friendly, down-to-earth manner with much humility, but little structure. One can open up the book to almost any page and start reading.

The structure works because the book mainly concentrates on three aspects of the author’s life: adventure, business, and personal. As a fan of movies, and, of course, books about movies, I certainly enjoyed that part. The second part, business, was interesting but started to be repetitive. Mr. Grylls counts his business ventures, failures, and what he learned from them. An important aspect indeed, but the mantra of “never give up” is repeated ad nauseam.

For some reason, the author feels the need to re-introduce every celebrity over and over again, which I found annoying. In the last part, the author recounts all the amazing people he met, not necessarily celebrities and royalty, but memorable people of all walks of life. I did appreciate how he takes time to be with his family as an utmost priority, as well as acknowledging those who helped him on his journey – the sign of a big heart indeed.

This is a positive and encouraging book. I would not, however, call it an all-encompassing biography. There’s some self-reflection, but it’s mostly composed of short chapters (3 pages on average, I believe) consisting of amusing stories from Mr. Grylls’ life and career.
