The memoir by the famous actor tells of Hollywood’s Golden Age and tells of the famous starlets he has known, dated, or married. This is not a gossip book, but a homage the megastars of cinema, which he personally knew.
I Loved Her in the Movies by Robert Wagner (with Scott Eyman) is an entertaining read, with insight into the harsh business of show business. These women must have been made of steel to survive the harsh treatment and challenges thrown at them during in the early part of the 20thCentury.
I am not a stranger to movies, I love the art form and storytelling. This was especially true before streaming entered our lives, going to the cinema was an event, And yet, some of the stars Mr. Wagner writes about were unfamiliar to me. I’ve heard, and seen (on TV) the likes of Raquel Welch, Gloria Swanson, Marilyn Monroe, and Dorothy Lamour. But I was not familiar with the likes of Joan Blondell, Irene Dunne, and Debra Paget, to name a few. Many more movies have been added to my “must see” list – which is already too long.
It’s too bad we no longer have “movie stars”.
The book is well organized, telling the short anecdotes in chronological order. Mr. Wagner also discusses, the way the industry impacted the women, technological changes and how aging is treated differently between the sexes.
This is a kind, safe book, Mr. Wagner honors the women he talks about, and does not air the dirty laundry, if there is any. It’s a cautious, anecdotal book where the most negative thing he can say is “I wasn’t crazy about my experience working with…”
