Thoughts:
I really enjoyed Göring’s Gamble by Dan O’Rourke, I cared about the characters and the story kept me reading. Alternative history can easily go wrong, but I think the author go it mostly right in the book.
I enjoyed the science behind the fiction, and that each character was developed very well. There were several twists that, while not shocking, certainly help keep the narrative flowing.
The author is obviously a fan of poet W. B. Yeats and started each chapter with a supposedly relevant poem segment. I don’t know much about poems, nor did I get the references but those are easily skipped and did not stop me from enjoying the book.
The author did weave a bunch of real life English literary personas in the book, while not absolutely necessary it was a nice nod and a wink. The only part that I found to be over the top was at the end, when Mrs. Brooke, the protagonist, gives Winston Churchill a feminist lecture minutes before an Atom bomb is about to explode.
Overall I thought it was a great effort on the part of the author. Even though this is alternate history, I felt the author captured the feel of the time and place.
Synopsis:
In 1940 Hitler got himself an atomic bomb, however it cannot be delivered by air. Hermann Göring is tasked with delivering the bomb to London, risking his career and the war on its success.
In London Maggie Brooke, a literature professor, awaits her son to come back from the front while collecting unused metals to help the war effort. Mrs. Brooke notices that some fallen Nazi plans do not seem as if they were shot down the Royal Air Force, but as if they crashed on purpose.
