Thoughts:
Escape from the Deep: The Epic Story of a Legendary Submarine and Her Courageous Crew by Alex Kershaw is an excellent narrative of the story of the most successful and decorated submarine in World War II. The submarine was sunk, by its own torpedo, in 19944. Amazingly nine sailors managed to escape (firs time it was done from a sunk submarine 180 feet below the water) but their ordeal has just begun.
Mr. Kershaw tells an excellent story, pieced together by official records, as well personal experience as told by the survivors themselves. After the sailors managed to get out of the ship, they were brought on to Japanese boats and were taken as prisoners of war, including Richard O’Kane, the Captain. The men suffered 10 brutal months of beatings and torture only to return to broken homes suffering from PTSD and survivors’ guilt.
Escape from the Deep is about 300 page but the storytelling is tight and the narrative readable and relatable. This fascinating story about a small, almost forgotten part of history.
