Epic Measures: One Doctor. Seven Billion Patients by Jeremy N. Smith is a book which tells the amazing and true story Medical doctor and economist Christopher Murray who strives to understand how humans live and die. The project Dr. Murray took onto himself is huge, took years of perseverance and struggles just to get started and will never be finished.

The Human Genome Project was a great breakthrough but for most people it was a nice headline but really didn’t mean anything. Dr. Murray said that life is not just about how long you live, but how many years of healthy living you acquire. The concept of studying how many healthy years people have before their bodies break for any reasons, and what can be done about is such a simple concept (with admittingly a difficult execution) is mind boggling. Dr. Murry’s Global Burden of Disease project is now a world power and a force for change.

Dr. Murray’s findings were very controversial, especially with the World Health Organization, which he was working for. Bureaucrats across the world did not want to admit they were having issues, or should be spending money in different places. Aid workers were afraid to admit that their programs were actually working because they’d assume that the funding would dry up.

The author tells the story of Dr. Murray in a narrative way which could have been a novel, if he was a literary invention I’d say that Mr. Smith flushed out the character of Dr. Murray fully, with all his quirks and faults.

The book should be required reading in medical school and for those who create policy. Best of all, I learned many things from this book and even changed some of my day-to-day habits.
