Thoughts:
I discovered Nebraska accidentally. Like every other teenager, Born in the USA was the soundtrack for 1984. I already had The River and, as a good New Jersey teen, was completing my Springsteen CD collection.
It took me a few listens to realize that Nebraska was my favorite album. It was raw in content and production, and I felt it was just Bruce and me. To this day, it is my favorite Bruce Springsteen album, and when I saw a segment on TV about the book, I told my wife that she could stop looking for a birthday present for me.
Timing is everything.
Until I read Deliver Me From Nowhere by Warren Zanes, I had no idea many people shared my love for the album. I always thought it was a personal project for Springsteen (which it was), it was lost among his catalog of hits, and I was one of the few whom it spoke to.
Boy was I wrong.
The authorâs research is impeccable, and his discussions with Springsteen and the musicians the album influenced delve into its making in depth. The fact that Nebraska and Born in the USA were created at the same time and one might not have existed, or not existed as is, if itâs not for the other was mind-boggling.
The book made my appreciation for Nebraska even more. I knew some of the stories behind the songs, and while this book doesnât go into those, how the album came to be is a stroke of luck for all of us.
