Thoughts:
I have, for the most part, enjoyed many of in the Gabriel Allon series in particular, and Silva’s books in general. To be honest, I enjoyed the espionage storylines much more than art thefts one. While there are still beloved recurring characters, the excitement of espionage is simply not there.
A Death in Cornwall by Daniel Silva is still an entertaining book, but it’s formulaic. It’s not a page-turner and for some reason, there are a ton of fancy brands, and hotels. Gabriel Allon is not James Bond, and he was a lot more fun when he was a coarse spy than a snob.
One of the main things I always liked in the series is Allon’s gray world. He can mix with the rich and foolish while rubbing shoulders with underground criminals. All of them except him, and many owe him. It makes the series fun and gives a pretext as to why he succeeded where others fail
The plot is thin, the stakes are forced, and I don’t care about England’s honor. While certainly not as good as the previous novels, especially those involving spycraft, Mr. Silva still spins an entertaining yarn, but I wish he’d go back to basics. The books, at this point, are predictable with subplots galore.
I’m glad Mr. Silva is steering clear of recent events in the Middle East. I want to immerse myself in a fantasy world filled with paintings and corrupt politicians.
Synopsis:
Gabriel Allon, legendary Israeli spy and world-renowned art restorer, is retired from the spy game. Allon is called up by his friend, Detective Sergeant Timothy Peel, to help investigate the murder of Charlotte Blake, professor of Art History at Oxford.
Allon quickly uncovers that Prof. Blake was searching for information on a Picasso looted from a Jewish family during World War II. As more deaths occur, it’s obvious that someone powerful doesn’t want the investigation to continue, while Allon and company plan an elaborate sting to get to the painting and uncover the mystery.
