Thoughts:

This book came just in time, as the family is planning a two week road trip 3,600 mile (round trip) across the USA.  I have the previous version of the 5,000 ideas book, and was very interested in seeing the new version, since the family and I love road trips, especially off the highways where local treasures and interesting people can be found.

I don’t want to say “as usual”, but like many National Geographic books great photography is to be expected, and this book is no exception. The photographs themselves make you want to hop into the car and start driving.

100 Drives, 5,000 Ideas: Where to Go, When to Go, What to Do, What to See (2020 Edition) by Joe Yogerst gives the reader excellent ideas of where to go and what to do within their geographical area (for our family, we figure about 100 miles one way, for a day trip). The book also has great tips for those who like to do more than to drive, but bike, camp, hike, etc.

Whenever we go somewhere, I try learn something about the place. The US is still a young country so many attractions are still relevant and in very good shape (Mt. Vernon is one of our favorites), in many other countries context is important because sometimes it’s just a pile of rocks. In this book, the author gives some very cool facts about the locations, which will be great for anyone wanting to be on Jeopardy, or better yet, annoy the kids with your immense, and seemingly endless, fountain of impractical knowledge.

If you’re planning a vacation, or simply like to take road trips (like us), this book is for you. I could see myself using this book for years to come.
