Armchair BEA – Day 3 – Networking

June 6, 2012

As many book bloggers know, by the end of the week/month/year we end up with tens or even hundreds of books which is impractical to keep and painful to discard of. We all know the warnings about ARCs, but we also all know that to adhere to these warnings is impractical at best. Very few book bloggers that I heard about actually sell their free copies, most do not but that leaves the rest of us with piles of books and an annoyed spouse.

I try to give those books away, but I put some thought into it. If I have a friend or a relative who I know will enjoy the book but will never buy it for themselves I try to give it to them. Some of my neighbors are teachers and I donate appropriate books to their classroom libraries and some books I simply give away to appreciative readers.

Mainly, however, I donate the books to the library of a 55+ community in which my mother lives in.

I am looking for more ways to get involved in the community though. It’s great having a blog but I love the feel of community and knowing people around town. I have been looking for opportunities to present themselves, such as giving courses in the local library, writing for local paper and more.
Alas, this whole 24 hours in one day is a faulty design.

This morning I gave a sack full of books to the technician at the dermatologist’s office. Her eyes got as big as dollars! I love seeing people so happy to receive books.

I will be moving to a senior retirement apartment eventually after our house is sold and will start giving books away to them.

Great story Carol. My mom’s building actually has a very well stocked, albeit small, library.

I agree, 24 hours in one day is not enough! Honestly, I sometimes barely have time to keep up with my blog, much less work at networking to go beyond it!

    Happy ABEA!

I try to send the books out into the world, like you, to be adopted by book lovers. Some go to homes where I know they will be loved, some I leave as surprises in waiting rooms. I like to leave books in hospitals and doctors’ offices where a book that needs to be adopted will be a good thing or senior centers and family violence shelters .I put a little sticky in the book asking people to pass the book on, or leave it somewhere for someone else to enjoy.

A lot of my ARCs go to school to share with my students and I give others away.

    Thanks for participating!

    Here’s my networking post

Donating to the library is a great idea. There’s a local bookswap I often leave books in. Great post.

I like to keep the ones that have grabbed ahold of my heart, but also give many to my friends. I don’t know why – but I hadn’t thought about donating them to a library! (Having one of those V8 moments. lol) I love the idea of passing them on to a 55+ community!

    🙂

I could use an extra hour or two each day as well. lol If for nothing else but to read my TBR stack!! lol

You could always send them my way. I’m always in need. LOL!
