I enjoyed learning about 17th Century Netherlands, even though some of the phrasing seemed odd but I will choke that up to the translation. I thought many of the characters, especially the protagonist, Catrin, acted in a way which I would not have thought women in the mid-1600s acted. The little art history and guest appearances by famous Dutch artists of the time were interesting, and a wink towards modern day readers who know the future success of those struggling.
