Armchair BEA – Day 4 – “Beyond the Blog”
Latest Posts / June 7, 2012

“If none of these apply we’d love for you to share a fun aspect about your blog or life that may be completely separate from books!” Between life, work and kids there is very little left (a man needs to eat and has to sleep). My two little monsters keep me busy and I cherish every moment even when I get mad and the wife needs attention every now and then also. Sometimes, we even get to talk during dinner or before going to sleep. Sometimes… The last year saw some great changes. I started a new job and we moved to a new state. I have moved several times during my life but always to a place where I knew friends and had family. This time we moved to a new place with no one but our small nuclear unit. To be honest it was much more difficult than I imagined – but we survived and we will thrive even though we have to start all over again (we lost a ton of money on our house). One of the things I had to put on hold was my wood working – which left me more time to read….

Armchair BEA – Day 3 – Networking
Latest Posts / June 6, 2012

As many book bloggers know, by the end of the week/month/year we end up with tens or even hundreds of books which is impractical to keep and painful to discard of. We all know the warnings about ARCs, but we also all know that to adhere to these warnings is impractical at best. Very few book bloggers that I heard about actually sell their free copies, most do not but that leaves the rest of us with piles of books and an annoyed spouse. I try to give those books away, but I put some thought into it. If I have a friend or a relative who I know will enjoy the book but will never buy it for themselves I try to give it to them. Some of my neighbors are teachers and I donate appropriate books to their classroom libraries and some books I simply give away to appreciative readers. Mainly, however, I donate the books to the library of a 55+ community in which my mother lives in. I am looking for more ways to get involved in the community though. It’s great having a blog but I love the feel of community and knowing people around…

Armchair BEA – Day 2 – Best of 2012
Latest Posts / June 5, 2012

Today’s suggested topic by the folks at Armchair BEA is Best of 2012. Here are five of my favorites, I tried to make some eclectic picks. Let me know if your read any and what you thought. I arranged them in alphabetical order. Flags Over the Warsaw Ghetto: The Untold Story of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising by Moshe Arens More than anything, the book tells of the inability of humans to set aside ideological differences to fight a common enemy. The book chronicles how two groups of Jews were prevented by ideology to join and fight the Nazi murder machine Guest of Honor: Booker T. Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, and the White House Dinner That Shocked a Nation by Deborah Davis This well researched book touches on politics of the era as well as the fragile and difficult race relations after the American Civil War. The book extensively goes into the events that shaped the breakthrough meal, starting with the end of the Civil War and short biographies of the two main players. It was striking to see how parallel the lives of two men, each at one end of the social spectrum (an ex slave and a privileged white) were eerily similar. Both men, close at age, got…

Tightwad Tuesday — Free or Affordable eBooks — Humor
Latest Posts , Tightwad Tuesday / June 5, 2012

Welcome to another edition of Tightwad Tuesday. This week I figured we’ll try some humor – we all love to laugh, it makes us feel good and is good for the soul. Authors: If you’d like  your book to be featured on Tightwad Tuesdays please email me. For the Kindle: Daily Deal The File on H. By Ismail Kadare In the mid 1930s, two young Irish-American scholars voyage to the Albanian highlands with an early model of a marvelous invention, the tape recorder, in hand. Their mission? To discover how Homer could have composed works as brilliant and as long as the Iliadand the Odysseywithout ever writing them down. The answer, they think, can be found only in Albania, the last remaining natural habitat of the oral epic. But immediately on their arrival the scholars’ seemingly arcane research puts them at the center of ethnic strife in the Balkans. Mistaken for foreign spies, they are placed under the surveillance of a nearsighted informer with a prodigious gift for reproducing conversations he has overheard. He is soon generating a stream of floridly written reports about the visitors’ puzzling activities. News of their presence in the provincial town of N——- sets gossip…

Day 1 – Armchair BEA – Introduction
Latest Posts / June 4, 2012

I decided to join the Armchair BEA this year because even though I’m in close proximity to NYC I decided that this year, again, my money will be better spent elsewhere (food, shelter, kids, etc.). But the Armchair BEA promises to be fun as well. So here it goes… Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging? I’m a husband, father or two mischievous children who actually puts some time away everyday to read. I got into blogging by doing a LibraryThing challenge (50 books a year) and had no where that I can call my own to write my thoughts about them and hopefully interact. What are you currently reading, or what is your favorite book you have read so far in 2012? I’m currently reading Only One Life by Sara Blaedel, a Danish Crime Writer. I have read one other book by Ms. Blaedel of the same series and got the opportunity to read this one before it comes out. Tell us one non-book-related thing that everyone reading your blog may not know about you. I used to do a lot of wood…
