Jim Bishop (21 November, 1907 – 26 July, 1987) was a journalist and author from New Jersey.

  1. James Alonzo Bishop was born in Jersey City, New Jersey.
  2. He dropped out of school in eighth grade. He started learning to type, write in shorthand, and bookkeeping.
  3. In 1929 Mr. Bishop found himself working as a copy boy at the New York Daily News
  4. By 1930 he was working as a cub reporter at the New York Daily Mirror, and stayed there until 1943.
  5. He joined Collier’s, an American general interest magazine, where he worked for the next two years.
  6. Until 1948, Jim Bishop worked for Liberty magazine, and had other jobs until 1957. 
  7. His column, Jim Bishop: Reporter, landed him on Richard Nixon’s list of political opponents.
  8. The Day Lincoln was Shot, which was published in 1955 was a cumulation of 24 years of work. The book sold more than 3 million copies, and was translated into 16 languages.
  9. The book was dramatized for TV in 1956 as a live CBS special show (Jack Lemmon played John Wilkes Booth), and ones again in 1988 as a TNT made for television movie.
  10. In 1974 he published  FDR’s Last Year: April 1944 – April published in 1974. The book, his most acclaimed, brought awareness to the fact that FDR was in declining health and the secrecy surrounding it.
