Jane Goodall (3 April, 1934 – 1 October, 2025) was not only a world-renowned primatologist, but also an author with an amazing literary output.

Fun Facts about Jane Goodall:
1. Valerie Jane Morris-Goodall was born in London to Mortimer Herbert Morris-Goodall, a businessman, and novelist Margaret Myfanwe Joseph.
2. According to Ms. Goodall’s her fascination with primates started when her father gave her a stuffed chimpanzee which she aptly named Jubilee. As of 2000, Jubilee was still in her possession.
3. Her first major work in the literary arena, In The Shadow of Men, was published in 1971 and immediately became a bestseller. As of the time of this post, it was translated into 48 languages. Before the book, she established her name through well received articles in National Geographic.
4. Jane Goodall is known for keeping meticulous handwritten journals which formed the basis and raw data for her first three books.
5. Academia frowned upon her writings (so you know she did something right) because she gave the chimpanzees names instead of numbers, as was the standard at the time.
6. In 1986 she published her book summarizing decades of research in the field. To this day, The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior is considered the definitive scientific work on the behavior of chimpanzees.
7. Jane Goodall authored many children’s books which, like her other works, were well received and wildly successful. She also narrated several of her own audiobooks.

Ms. Goodall didn’t just write scientific books for academics or the masses, she also wrote an autobiography (Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey) in 1999, a book about the ethics of the food industry (Harvest for Hope) in 2005, and even a book of prose and poetry (Hope for Animals and Their World) in 2009.
9. Jane Goodall had several titles in the New York Times Best Seller list for five decades. She also received the Kyoto Prize for her scientific writing and was sought after for writing forwards and introductions, which she did for over 50 books concerning the environment and animals
10. Even though Jane Goodall spent most of her time traveling for her work she authored, or co-authored 25 books.
