Thoughts:
This is the kind of history book that I really enjoy. Not just scholarly, but highly entertaining. engaging, and doesn’t leave an English, and or Medieval history novice like me in the dust, much like his other books.
The Wars of the Roses were fought over 50 years by two families vying for the English crown. After all the bloodshed, the House of the Tudors came out victorious and remained on the throne until this day
The Wars of the Roses by Dan Jones brings to life the English royalty, including some of the many controversial figures. I almost forgot I was reading a history book and started rooting for some, connecting to others and being fascinated by most.
The book is so much fun because Mr. Jones chose to focus on the people who made The Wars of the Roses entertaining – in hindsight of course. Henry VI, Margaret of Anjou, Richard III who gets a bad rep everywhere, Warwick “The Kingmaker”, Margaret Beaufort and more.
The stories of these people are weaved into bloody battles, merciless politics, and personal relationships which defined that turbulent time. While it’s not an all-encompassing history, and what is, it’s a wonderful and readable introduction into English history.
