Thoughts:

The book has a very interesting premise, it researches how did Nazi war criminals managed to escape Europe, and justice. What it found was vast support networks from unlikely sources, and the bending of ideology and ethics by doing so.

Operation Ghost Reich by Gary Covella’s main theme is the complicity of various organizations to help the Nazi criminals, from the Vatican to the black markets of trafficking them to far off places for relative safety (many for financed by SS gold). Even our own intelligence agencies (American, Russian and English) recruited Nazi specialists to fight the Cold War.

Along the way, under the surface, there was a shadow war between those who wanted to bring them to justice, and those who – for whatever reason – sheltered them. The most famous story is Eichman’s capture and kidnapping from Argentina by Mossad, but there are others.

I thought the book was meticulously researched, Mr. Covella had used newly declassified documents such as shipping ledgers and German intelligence files, to create a timeline and challenge those who insist of rewriting history.
I have to say it, but rewriting history is no longer a difficult challenge in the information age.

This book is written with an international lens and not looking through the eyes of one specific country or culture. Unfortunately, the legacy and revisionism reached the far corners of the Earth, from the Argentine Patagonia to Australia.

The narrative is gripping and makes its points very well. However, I felt that the book was repetitive, and would have liked to hear some more examples of justice served or denied instead of reading about the most famous ones several times over.
