Thoughts:
This book is not simply a guide, but also provides short histories, anecdotes about the movies and the author’s life, as well as the author’s criticism of the movies. Mr. Thomas does not pull any punches, while a Disney fan-boy, he does not feel obligated to defend bad movies, or the company itself.
Each movie in Disney’s Animated Classics by Stephen Rötzsch Thomas gets its own chapter, but the author does go on tangents here and there when appropriate. I found the one about the adult Disney fans particularly interesting.
I remember when planning our trip to Walt Disney World with our kids, personally I thought the demands were ridiculous – do I really have to figure out where I’m going to have lunch six months ahead of time?
Turns out – yes!
Surfing the Disney information servers (Disboards was the most helpful) I fell into the realm of the adult Disney fans. Most of it was just great, I enjoy Disney movies and like Disniana, but others were a bit out there. The posts about having “kids free” days at the parks so full grown adults won’t have to suffer the long lines of… taking pictures with teenagers in customs was just strange, and a bit disconcerting. For me, watching kids, my kids especially but other kids as well, full of joy at the “magic” is one of the most enjoyable parts of the experience.
Back to the book though, it is full of information and analysis which are fascinating to read, a change from the official Disney books, as well as a short history of Walt Disney himself, . Being this an ebook, and a galley, there were some formatting issues. There are a bunch of pictures in the back which I thought would have been better sprinkled through the relevant parts in the narrative.
While a bit disjointed, this is an enjoyable book, especially with all the tangents the author takes, and his honest appraisal of the movies. I found the personal touch to be easy, conversational and written through a keen eye of a loving fan.
