Thoughts:
I have never read an Orphan X novel, but this one caught my eye. Frankly, I don’t know why I didn’t read the Evan Smoak sag before but I’m certainly planning to pick it up.
This novel had psychological nuances to it, which I honestly didn’t expect. I thought I was into some quick action, comic book type, novel and I got a complex one full of interesting characters and an intriguing story.
I especially enjoyed the battle of man vs. machine which happens within Orphan X himself. His internal battle gets more complicated, when Anca, the woman he’s helping, demands he will not kill anyone on her behalf. That was hard for him, and I certainly understand it because the villains in this book certainly deserve killing.
Smoak’s team includes a 17-year-old tech-wiz (like all teams need these days) which seemed to me is more of a father/child one than a business relationship. Joey’s growth withing the novel causes Smoak anxiety which, with all his training, is difficult to handle. This paternal aspect of him was unexpected to me, as well as to him.
The novel tackles a modern-day issue, that of trafficking and using women for pornography against their own will. The tech-heavy investigation adds a techno-thriller aspect to the book which grounds it in today’s reality.
Antihero by Gregg Hurwitz was an unexpected pleasure and hooked me on the series. It’s not just a combat book, but asks very serious questions about vengeance, justice, and society at large.
Synopsis:
Evan Smoak, Orphan X, The Nowhere Man, flies to the East Coast to help the powerful Luke Devine during a mental crisis, hoping he won’t destroy Earth as we know it. During his time there, he learns that a young woman was kidnapped, raped and her rapists published the film on a porn site.
Evan and his team track down the woman and the faceless men who harmed her. The team faces threats from all sides but honor the victim’s request not to kill anyone.
