Thoughts:

I think that one of the most surprising things, to me, about this book is that I had never heard of the Kuehn family before. I read a lot of books about World War II, a ton of espionage books, and several books about Pearl Harbor, and I can’t remember them being mentioned. That is not to say they weren’t, but I don’t remember.

Family of Spies by Christine Kuehn starts with the author getting a letter from a script writer asking about her family. At first, she thought it was a mistake, but the more she inquired, the more she unraveled her shocking past.

Mrs. Kuehn’s investigation discovered that both her German grandparents, as well as her aunt were Nazi agents living in Hawaii, passing intelligence to the Japanese before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Her aunt, Ruth Kuehn is considered to be one of the most interesting female spies in history that not many people have heard about.

This is a captivating book, reading like an espionage thriller, successfully weaving history into the narrative. The author tells of her research, her family’s history and general history in an account which ties the sections in a very smooth manner.

Erin Bennett narrates this audio book and does a marvelous job. She’s easy to understand, the pronunciation of foreign names and places was spot on, and knew when, and what, to emphasize.

A unique story of the Second World War, with details about the espionage effort leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. The memoir’s themes of family secrets, true identity and betrayal are timeless as they are intimate.
