Like many others of Jonas Jonasson's books, The Distinctly Competent District Councillor is also on brand with a narrative of calculated chaos. The author is certainty a clever writer who knows how to write comedy, while making an impact in the process.
The protagonist, young mayor Jutia Bäck, gets a lot thrown at her when attempting to get Traumbett's contract. The kids need a German school, the small town has one pizzeria, a small hotel, no place for a major CEO to comfortably live, And what about parking? The 22 spaces are not nearly enough for the 300 employees...?
The book moves swiftly from a comedy of errors to slapstick, and even some morality thrown in for good measure-but not enough to ruin the story. I loved the characters who are oddballs full of good intentions, trying to save their town and ethics be damned, especially if no one is going to get hurt and the town benefits.
A brilliant, funny book which is heartfelt and thoughtful about the importance of community and that people are looking for connections, borders be damned.
Synopsis:
