Thoughts:
This is the first book in the Detour series, and it’s an engrossing read from the first page. I especially enjoyed the “science” part of science-fiction, and not knowing where the book was going, I enjoyed the Twilight-Zone-esque storyline. That being said, you don’t need to know any science to enjoy the novel, it’s very accessible and the focus is mainly on humans and conspiracy, not the intricacies of space travel
I haven’t heard of the authors before, but after realizing the Mr. Rake is a TV writer I realized why the chapter felt like TV episodes on the page. Each chapter ends with a page-turning episode that made me want to keep on reading. This is reminiscent of some of my favorite adventure novels which were originally published as magazines serials, with a twist at end to make readers come back the next week.
The motley crew of characters, astronauts that have to deal with civilians who basically won a lottery, and civilians who suddenly been demoted to basically cargo works well. As a child of the 1980s, I expected them to eventually bond and was not disappointed – but how they bonded was a real fun read.
Detour by Jeff Rake and Rob Hart did end with a cliff-hanger though. Nothing was really resolved, and the reader has no idea what’s actually happening.
So yes, I’m looking forward to the sequel, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it as a TV show in the near future.
Synopsis:
Ryan Crane, an off-duty cop, saves the life of billionaire tech-bro and presidential candidate John Ward. As a reward he is offered a seat on a multi-year mission to Titan, and $20 million. Ryan doesn’t understand why he was picked, but the money is life changing and will afford his handicapped son a chance at a normal life.
The team of astronauts succeed in their mission, even though they have one strange anomaly, and head back to Earth. Upon returning each one notices that things are the same, but not quite, and suddenly their lives are in danger and things start spinning out of control.
