I always loved Westerns, even before I could understand the nuances and history (or more likely, rewrite of history). I still do enjoy the genre, even though other “Westerns” (ex: the superhero movies) have taken over.
The History of the Western Movie by Jem Duducu dives into the good, bad and ugly (pun intended) of the genre. The book covers a wider variety of movies, and while I haven’t seen some of them, I certainly agree with the author’s choices of including them in the book.
The book gave me insights into the beginnings of Westerns, the spike in popularity and how Westerns impacted other genres. Mr. Duducu even includes “non-Western westerns” which I found fascinating and made me think of other movies which might be included.
Even though it has a ton of information, the book is easy to read and flows very well. There are several pictures as well, but I got an eBook galley so I’m not sure what will be included in the final product, but I did enjoy looking through them and doing web searches on the movies I was unfamiliar with. The book tracks the historical journey of the Western movie, focusing on its enduring appeal, transformations, and role as a cultural mirror
If you love reading about movies, this book is a wonderful overview of the Western genre, and you get some pretty good recommendations for movie night. It’s a well researched, easy to follow, and very interesting book.
