Many stories have been written about the subject, some good, some not-so-good. The not-so-good ones involve some impromptu, off the canon adventure but the good ones show you a side of your idols you never knew about, never noticed or simply ignored.
Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon by Matt Fraction, David Aja (Illustrator), Javier Pulido (Illustrator) is one of the good ones, the type of book you will not soon forget. Clint Barton, Hawakeye, lives a normal life. His Brooklyn apartment could be a broom closet in Stark’s house, his depression rivals that of Captain America and without his disguise he feels as if he is stuck on some foreign place.
Clint is finding out what most of us already know – normal life is hard.
The Avengers are mentioned in passing, but there is no previous knowledge of any continuity required. One can simply pick up the issue and start enjoying. The writing is full of wit and humor, while the wonderful art keeps the story moving. Unlike many other fantastic adventures, this book is somewhat grounded in the Marvel universe, giving the readers a sense of danger and the characters to fight for something other than the bombastic “save the world” cliché.
The stories are sometimes funny, yet the overall tone of the graphic novel is dark and sad. Clint is looking for a purpose when he is not at work and doesn’t seem to be able to find it – unless he goes looking for trouble.
The graphic novel did live me with admiration to the regular guy who straggles to keep up with the superstars, but also planted a seed of disbelief.
After all, how does a regular guy keep up with the superstars?
