Thoughts:
Village of Secrets: Defying the Nazis in Vichy France by Caroline Moorehead tells the story of the small village and its surrounding area which were responsible for saving thousands of people during World War II who were on the Gestapoâs wanted list. The villagers saved many Jews but also resisters, freemasons, communists, and downed Allied airmen.
While the narrative those center around Le Chambon, the author gives credit to the surrounding area for the great help in smuggling those folks out of occupied France into Switzerland. The author did a great job describing the turmoil of the deported, splitting families apart, young children wandering the countryside after being orphaned or that of Sylvia Menker who was gassed in Auschwitz on her first birthday.
This is a very interesting and informative book, if a bit repetitive, but itâs an important document for future generations. If you are interested in World War II, the era, France or Jewish themes youâd find this book fascinating.
