The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride by Daniel James Brown tells the story from the perspective of Sarah Grave, newly wed wife to Jay Fosdick. The happy newlyweds joined Sarah’s family on a journey from Illinois to California in 1846.
The Graves family fell behind and joined a wagon train led by George Donner which took a shortcut across the Wasatch Mountains to the Great Salt Lake Desert. The “shortcut” took a good three weeks longer than the other way, and was much more treacherous and dangerous, especially with wagons, beasts of burden and children. During their journey, a storm blocked their way (the area is now called Donner Pass) and forced the survivors to fight nature within an inch of their lives, including being subjected to cannibalism.
The book is thoroughly researched, weaving science and history seamlessly, while telling an astounding story. Mr. Brown does not stop with the story, but researched every detail, from the conditions of the road to the strain of malaria the family suffered, to the food they might have ate or took with them on their life changing journey.
This book is very informative and a great read. As with any good historical work, it brings the people to life researching their physical and psychological conditions.
