Thoughts:
Early Decision by Lacy Crawford is a very interesting book about a world not many of us ever get to see or experience, that of rich kids applying to college. Hopefully many of us will attend college (money permitting) and this book does provide some insight into this insane process.

Ms. Crawford wrote an amusing book, easy to read, quick, intelligent and often funny. The author even made me like some of the most spoiled kids the protagonist was engaged with, as well as a few pointers on writing essays (and if you follow my blog you know that there is certainly a lot left to be desired).

One of the most interesting aspects of the book was the protagonist’s ability to move from the world the top 1% lives in to the world the rest of us live in. Those folks have, what my father called, “rich people problems”, meaning that they make mountain out of molehills from issues that most of us won’t even give a second thought to.

The author understands that social inequity is a given, and that some kids are born and bred to go to Ivy League schools. She shines a light on uncomfortable truths in our society which some take for granted, and some tend to ignore.

This is a book highlights the absurdities of playing on an uneven field, being made even more uneven by power and money. The novel is an interesting, coherent read with insightful context about college admissions and the how to write personal essays which defines oneself.
