Thoughts:
The Sea Beach Line by Ben Nadler is a strange novel, it took me almost one third of the book to get into it, and I’m glad I did. The book has memorable characters and several interesting plotlines.
The book simply worked. The author managed to combine comedy, drama, romance, mystery, religion (Judaism) and a healthy dose of NYC culture in the narrative, yet somehow stay focused on a loose plot.
As I mentioned earlier, it took me a good while to get into the book, to be honest I almost put it down. It’s not that the story wasn’t interesting, it was just a hectic time (the holidays) and I was looking for a quick, enjoyable read. I got the enjoyable part, but the book is packed with plots so it was a while before I got my head wrapped around what’s going on. The author, however, seems to know this and every few pages threw in another twist, smart alekc comment or an interesting curve ball to keep me going.
Synopsis:
Izzy Edel got kicked out of college for selling drugs, while at home with his mother in New Mexico he receives word that his father died mysteriously in New York City. Izzy goes to NYC not believing that his father is dead.
At NYC, Izzy tries to make a living like his father, as a street bookseller, hoping to get more information from his friends and business associates. While working, he meets a strange runaway Jewish girl, Rayna. During his time on the streets Izzy and Rayna deal with mobsters (both Russian and Jewish Orthodox), street vendors, criminals and other members of society in the Big Apple, while trying to find their way in the world.
