About:
Operation Garbo: The Personal Story of the Most Successful Spy of World War II by Juan Pujol and Nigel West is a non-fiction book about the most successful double agent in World War II. The book is a biography of the life of Juan Pujol, the most accomplished British double agent in World War II and one of the few men, if not the only one, to receive both an Iron Cross from the Germans and a Member of the Order of the British Empire from the British.

Thoughts:
Operation Garbo: The Personal Story of the Most Successful Spy of World War II by Juan Pujol and Nigel West is actually two books in one. The first part is an enthralling memoir of the spy, Juan Pujol Garcia a.k.a Garbo, the second part was a bit dry (for example: featuring correspondence about imaginary forces) but nonetheless interesting to anyone who invested time learning about World War II.

After he started working for the British, Pujol invented a complex network of 26 agents. To keep the German intelligence fed with almost accurate information, Pujol had help from the British Secret Service, MI6. The Germans appreciated Pujol’s efforts very much, as the MI6 fed him with many truths along with sophisticated lies or elaborate rouses. For example one of his messages warned the Germans of an imminent attack, only to be conveniently delayed and reach its destination a short time after the attack has occurred. Garbo’s biggest contribution was to World War II was to convince the Germans that the Allied assault was going to take palce at Pas de Calais and that Normandy is just a diversion

This is an interesting and insightful story which offers a small, concentrated glimpse into the world of espionage. I enjoyed the narrative and detailed description of Grabo’s imaginary spy network.
