About:
Grandpa’s Mountain: Letters From a Border Kibbutz in Israel by Arieh Larkey is a short novel or correspondence. The book is target, via language and narrative, to younger readers – something I kept I mind while reading it.

Thoughts:
Grandpa’s Mountain: Letters From a Border Kibbutz in Israel by Arieh Larkey is a novel mainly consisting of letters a grandson, Steve Friedman of New Jersey, and the grandfather he never met who lives in an Israeli Kibbutz. The author tries to explain the situation in the Middle East, what is a kibbutz to a young Jewish American audience.

I thought this was a sweet, short book. No 12-year-old I know would use the language or vernacular you Mr. Friedman of New Jersey would use, but I understand the mechanics of trying to convey so much information to a young audience.

The book is a good introductory to young adults about the state of Israel and the range of experiences for American Jews, as well as a coming of age story.
