Thoughts:
City of Thieves by David Benioff is a wonderful book, containing engaging characters, great story peppered with dark humor all across the pages. The blend of fact and fiction in this survival story lends itself to a mix of seriousness and hilarity which the author does a great job putting together.
The book tells a traditional coming-of-age tale, but in a very refreshing way. The two main characters of the book work very well together, and the pairing is a classic of two unfortunate persons stuck together for a short time.
The author also have done his historical research to make the book ring true and interesting, the setting of the Siege of Leningrad is engaging and colorful. The story is told from the point of view of Lev, a 17 year-old being tasked with an impossible mission, but allows the author to give a decent overview of the siege and perspective from mud-level.
This book has a lot to offer, it is a war story, a coming of age triumph, a serious look at the Siege of Leningrad with lots of humor and best of all, historically accurate. I enjoyed reading this book very much and would recommend it wholly.
Synopsis:
Seventeen year-old Lev Beniov is arrested during the Siege of Leningrad and is put into a cell with Kolya, a deserter from the Russian army. Both Lev and Kolya expect to be summarily executed in the morning, but instead they are brought to a Colonel who gives them a chance to save their lives by getting their hands on a dozen eggs for his daughter’s wedding cake.
An impossible and improbable mission.
Lev and Kolya go on their hunt, through the city and behind enemy lines hoping they’ll survive another day so they can go back to live their lives.
